Discovering Design with Chemistry is a high school chemistry course designed for students who have completed Algebra 1. This independent-study, college-preparatory course covers fundamental aspects of chemistry such as the classification of matter, atomic structure, spectroscopy, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, physical change, chemical change, stoichiometry, solutions, ideal gases, acid/base chemistry, reduction/oxidation reactions, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium. Weaving together concepts and their mathematical applications, the course teaches students how to think as a chemist so they can analyze the major changes that occur in matter.

The course contains 46 separate experiments that illustrate various concepts being explored. Many are quantitative in nature, including measuring the wavelength of microwaves, determining the number of water molecules in a hydrated compound, calculating percent yield, measuring the concentration of a hydrogen peroxide solution, determining the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar, measuring the specific heat of a metal, and determining the change in enthalpy for a chemical reaction. Others are qualitative, such as performing flame tests, examining the interference of light waves, comparing metals to nonmetals, exploring Boyle's Law, doing litmus tests, and electroplating.

Throughout the course, the student is shown how chemistry reveals the amazing design that exists all around us. From the details of atomic structure to the makeup of the very air that we breathe, chemistry shows us the marvelous handiwork of God.

"I am confident that this course will prepare my son above and beyond the expectation of a chemistry course in regular school."

"We used [Discovering Design with Chemistry] this past year. My son struggles with science but he and my husband worked through it and did so very well."

This is such an excellent chemistry course. I took AP chemistry in high school and again in college, but those courses did not explain things as well as this course by Dr. Wile. His conversational style and clear/straightforward examples make the material approachable.

I have taught Dr. Wile's chemistry course several times in a co-op setting, and I was excited to see that he had come out with this new one. It is a delight to teach. The progression is incremental and students get all the help they need. I appreciate the online helps. Also, the option to print the Comprehension Questions and Review Questions as worksheets makes it easier for the student. The reproducible extra review questions are so helpful to prepare students for the test.

Thank you, Dr. Wile, for another GREAT course!!!

"We've been using Discovering Design with Chemistry this school year. Both my son and I find the book to be clearly written. Dr. Wile makes the concepts easy to understand--or as easy as chemistry can get. I know Dr. Wile has a webpage for extra help, but with the practice problems, comprehension questions, and chapter review we haven't needed it yet. You will need this webpage to mark the errata he found in this edition.

The Answer Key and Tests book is very beneficial to me as a mom. It starts with information of how to record lab work, assessing your student, and calculating his final grade. All of the Chapter Review questions and Test questions are solved step-by-step. I especially appreciate the test answers since I am not a chemistry expert. Dr. Wile lists how many points each problem is worth, and breaks down those points in the solution. That makes it easier to know how much partial credit I can award if the answer wasn't exact."

I have been going through DDC with ten homeschooled sophomores this year. I took seven students through ECC a few years ago, and I have to say that although both texts were well done...DDC is fabulous.
